Can I fly pregnant?

Doctors unanimously agree that air movements are perfectly acceptable and normal for pregnant women. Up to the time of birth, air travel will be safe and will not harm either the fetus or the mother. The situation is different when talking about difficult situations. WHO representatives advise pregnant women to refuse flights when:

  1. Dates longer than 36 weeks.
  2. The presence of complications – toxicosis, a clear threat of miscarriage, etc.
  3. Anemia 3, placenta previa.

Contraindications apply to women who have already become mothers – flights are strictly prohibited in the first 7 days after childbirth.

Possible risks of air travel

Flying on an airplane is not harmful both in the early and late stages. However, a number of risks remain that a small proportion of pregnant women face. No doctor can guarantee that an unexpected birth will not begin on a plane or toxicosis will not increase.

What is the danger of flying during pregnancy?

  • the threat of miscarriage, premature birth;
  • the occurrence of hypoxia due to a decrease in the level of oxygen saturation of arterial blood;
  • short-term metabolic disorders;
  • increased tone of the uterus;
  • the manifestation of high sensitivity to pressure drops.

It is impossible to predict obstetric complications – it all depends on individual characteristics. Even for short periods, you should consult your doctor before buying a ticket.

General rules of conduct during the flight

Knowing what to do before the flight and during the trip, the woman will be able to minimize the risks by ensuring the safety of the trip.

How to prepare for the flight?

When purchasing a ticket, ask for a place in the “nose” of the plane – here the transport practically does not “shake”. If possible, fly in business class: it is equipped with spacious soft chairs and large aisles. Choose comfortable clothes and shoes that do not constrain movements. Showing compression stockings or knee-highs. Take non-gas water on the road to refresh your face periodically. Dark chocolate will help level the effect of motion sickness.

How to behave in the cabin?

Fasten your seat belt under your stomach at the start of the flight. Take a comfortable pose, stretch your legs. Every hour for 5-10 minutes performs simple ankle rotations (up-down, left-right). Important! Do not sit in your favorite female foot-to-foot posture – this will complicate blood circulation and increase swelling.

Every hour, get up and walk for 10 minutes. Drink plenty of fluids. And one more precaution for those traveling alone – pass it to the flight attendant or put in a prominent place a note indicating personal data, blood type, contacts of a relative.

Favorable and unfavorable periods for air travel

How long can I fly? You should focus on the ongoing week of pregnancy.

Early Flights (1-4 weeks)

At weeks 1 and 2, flights are safe, but for the next 14 days, they must be abandoned. It is at 3-4 weeks that the internal organs of the child are laid, and even an ordinary cold or pressure drops can cause defects, miscarriage.

1 trimester

The most dangerous period is observed in the first trimester. At this time, the fetus is formed, and therefore stress needs to be minimized.

2 trimester

The indicated period is allowable flight time. In the second trimester, there is a low threat of premature birth, a decrease in toxicosis. The belly is not yet large, but because a woman moves easily and naturally. Important! At 18-22 weeks, there is a probable risk of late miscarriages.

3 trimesters

In the third trimester, flights are allowed at any time. However, some companies require a certificate from a gynecologist confirming permission to fly.

Having learned how air travel affects pregnancy, and what precautions you need to take, you can get ready for the trip. Most women note the absence of any pronounced negative feelings. In case of occurrence of such, usual methods will help – dark chocolate, refreshing candies, mineral water.
